CEQuery: Accessing the Graduate Voice

Ms Cindy Tilbrook, Executive Director, Graduate Careers Council of Australia; and Professor Geoff Scott, Pro Vice Chancellor, Quality, University of Western Sydney

CEQuery is software that allows for the detailed and systematic analysis of the qualitative comments contained in the Course Experience Questionnaire. Developed by the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) through funding provided by the Department of Education, Science & Training (DEST), the CEQuery software is being offered free of charge to the Australian higher education sector through the Graduate Careers Council of Australia.

CEQuery

  • Provides a linked graphic and textual method of accessing and analysing the information contained in student’s written comments in the CEQ.
  • Allocates comments to give domains (Outcomes, Staff, Course Design, Assessment, Support) divided into 26 specified subdomains
  • Provides an overall picture of the patterns of responses in the data and then enables the user, with a single click, to access comments of interest
  • Enables results to be presented in graphical, quantitative and qualitative form.

CEQuery has been extensively calibrated and field-tested with a pilot set of users. This calibration and testing has provided a preliminary, consolidated analyses which identifies:

  • a set of quality assurance checkpoints on what engages students in productive learning
  • an indication of current areas of good practice, patchy practice and some recurring areas for further enhancement.

This interactive workshop will:

  • provide some background information on the development of the software
  • provide an interactive demonstration of the software, using a database derived from the comments used in the pilot program.
  • present an overview and preliminary analysis of the findings from the pilot project.

The workshop will provide ample opportunities for participants to see the software in action and to ask questions.
