PRESENTER – ROD ST HILL
Developing a New Faculty Approach to Quality Policy
on Plagiarism
Mr Rod St Hill
Associate
Dean (Academic), Faculty of Business,
University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba, Qld 4350,
Australia
Hundreds of cases of plagiarism are detected each
year. Existing policy focuses on penalties rather than
education. The Faculty’s Quality Committee is
developing a quality policy focused on assessment design,
information literacy education, and redefining what
constitutes minor academic misconduct. The objective
of the new approach is to reduce the incidence of plagiarism,
by educating students about information literacy and
encouraging staff to design assessment instruments
that do not lend themselves to using somebody else’s
work without acknowledgement.
